AUTUMN EQUINOX BLESSING and NEWSLETTER 2017
It is a sweet joy to share with you the Autumn Equinox Newsletter as, and this may surprise you, it is the last festival of our native year! Samhain which occurs November 7th and is the next "cross quarter" seasonal festival of 2017 is, in truth, a celebration of the Irish indigenous New Year. This makes the last "quarter" festival Cónacht Fómhair /Autumn Equinox extremely special for us and our Ancestors. It is the final verse of energies that began at Samhain 2016. The green leaves are giving themselves up to browns, bronzes, reds and russets and the branches holding them will not be doing so for long. Any swallows you still might see are lagging behind the departure of most of their kin. For many of us, the shortening evenings bring an early shiver not so much from a cooler temperature, but more from an anticipation of the darker, colder days of Winter. Yet the Festival and Rites of Autumn Equinox call us away from such an energy sapping outlook to embrace this time, “the pause between Autumn and Winter”. So significant is the second Equinox of the year that it is our loss to not enter and celebrate it.

A Seasonal Autumn Equinox Ceremony
Review the natural themes of Autumn Equinox below and be drawn to the practices of those themes that resonate with you at this time. Hold the intention to grasp a personal experience of the micro season that is Equinox in synchronicity with how our natural and cosmic worlds turn at this treasured time in September:
Balance Restoration: The key to all health is striving and sustaining balance. Reflect on your physical health, psychological health, emotional health and Spiritual health. Is there noticeable imbalance in any of these realms of health for you? Is there imbalance between any of these realms in your life, i.e. do you favour attention on one of these realms? It is part of our human condition to observe imbalances and rather than be hard on ourselves, seek first to become grounded. Finding stillness in Nature, observing and sensing life around you, feeling the earth beneath you and a slowing, deepening rhythm to your breathing is the platform for proactive exercises to counteract imbalance.
Letting Go: It is said we cannot experience unconditional love nor true renewal without the grace to let go. Whether this is realised in your life as expressing/receiving forgiveness, moving out of an old life story, shedding an unhealthy habit, acknowledging that a key relationship in your life or an aspect of it truly no longer serves you, only you will know. Now is a pertinent time to step into recognition and activation of a conscious, graceful letting go as Nature around us embraces this phenomenon unreservedly. A beautiful, simple ritual at this time is an ‘Earth Painting’. Gather fallen leaves, twigs, stones, decaying blossoms and assemble a spontaneous creative ‘altar’ on the ground/beach, honouring that which needs to be let go from your life. Stand back from what you have created asking yourself “what do I see?” Let your Earth Painting speak back to you, particularly how it might be guiding you towards a superior, graceful method for letting go. Know that Mother Nature will become involved in the taking of your Earth Painting into new form in the 45 days between now and Samhain as you turn and walk away. Embrace the days between Equinox and Samhain as a key time to give yourself wholeheartedly to your letting go. (You might like to return to the place of your Earth Painting at Samhain to witness how Mother Earth has transformed your prayer).
What Is To Be Lived: The equality of light and dark at Autumn
Equinox, the balance between these energies and at the same time
the seasonal natural falling and decaying is a potent blend for
a clear sighted platform from which to assess how it is we are
to live in the remaining days of the year, until Samhain/New Year.
In the 45 days or so between actual Autumn Equinox (Sept. 23rd)
and actual Samhain (Nov.7th), we have an opportunity to review
our life since Samhain 2013 and to learn what has not been lived
by us. Courageous and creative living is always our potential.
Embrace the pause of balance at this Equinox, review your life
since Samhain last year. Listen to your heart and mind, particularly
the hunger that they hold. Be open to stepping forward into the
45 days to Samhain living each day from the strong intention to
satisfy the hunger you hold for fuller living. To ritualise this
reach for an apple from this year’s recent harvest. Cut it
into 2 exact halves through the middle. This will expose the 5
pointed star or pentacle in the apple. This is a symbol associated
with the archetype of Sofia and wisdom. Place into the flesh of
one half of the apple, dried fruit and/or nuts. Before placing
each into the apple, blow with your breath gratitude for all you
have received and achieved since last Samhain. Into the second
half of the apple, place similar items, but this time blowing into
each item the energy of that which you are calling into your life
experience. Bind both apple halves together with straw or cotton
and place in a tree, handing over to the tree and Nature your Equinox
Mála Naofa Autumn Equinox Ritual
For a mála carrier or if you carry another form of sacred medicine bundle, Cónocht Fómhair is an occasion for a conscious pause with your bundle and an invitation for deep engagement. Be guided by the following principles:
Cleansing/ Clearing/ Shedding
Balance: of light and dark/ of light and shadow/ of masculine and feminine/ of lower, middle, upper worlds
Twinship: You – Your Anamleathchúpla
(For those who have grown their full mála naofa through The Medicine Spiral), arrange your 13 lia-stones in a circle. Place your North lia at the top holding Samhain, your East lia to the right holding Imbolg, your South lia holding Bealtaine at the bottom and your West lia to the left holding Lughnasadh. Place the stones into a perfect circle and stand back. In the orbit of energies from Samhain to Samhain, trace your gaze from your North lia clockwise around the circle until you return to the North lia again. Autumn Equinox energies will correspond with the middle West lia. As you engage with this lia, what aspect of personal and cosmic life is held in this lia? Be alive to how the lia is awakening you to important energies to attend to or to receive from at this time of year. Consider an imram-journey with or into this lia.
As trees and shrubs shed at this time, look into your mála
for anything is decaying or “old” in the sense that
it is appropriate to shed it from your bundle i.e. old summer blossoms,
photos, icons. Offer a thorough cleanse to your lia naofa and other
items. Shake out and/or wash your wrapping cloth. Let your mála
hold the natural energies of shedding by placing a fallen pine
cone or beech nut or similar in your bundle.
As Autumn Equinox is a twin of Spring Equinox, this is a potent time for us (i.e. those who have completed the West Direction) to give time and energy to the twinning in our life and have that sacred relationship embodied and present in your mála. This is a time for imram-journey to your anamleathchúpla/soul twin residing in the upper world. Receive inspiration and teaching from this fully healed reflection of yourself. Seek to consecrate your sacred twin in your mála.
